Consistency for the Sake of Consistency

In this article Jared Spool argues that consistency in site design should be balanced with an awareness of current user knowledge. It took me a couple of reads to understand what he was saying, but it did get me thinking. At the core of usable tools is an understanding users. Consistent design is just that consistent, it is not always more usable.
